Mud is Drying up, Grass is Growing!

One of my favorite things about farming is how the cyclical nature of things is so magnified on a farm. Every season brings its own joys, but springtime is a special kind of fun. Here is a short list of a few of our latest adventures:

*6 calves born so far--all 6 bulls! Unbelievable.

*Khaki Campbell ducklings have grown into extremely chaotic and loud adult ducks...still waiting on eggs and still wondering why they act as though I am here to murder them every time I bring them food.

*Goose sitting on a massive nest of eggs--obnoxious gander doing an impression of an enraged rattle snake whenever anyone goes within 50 feet of her nest.

*Adventurous calves found walking down Mulino Road after slipping under the hot wire. New hot wire installed lower down!

*16 chickens killed in cold blood by a nasty little weasel! (So sad/maddening! Layers are back in action but bear with us as we re-build our hen family).

*Peacock tail is BACK and more beautiful than ever. And yes--he is still showing it to every man, woman and chicken on the farm--whenever he's not occupied attacking his reflection in someone's bumper.

*Giant hole in the wall above the stove fixed with a DIY vent cover--yay me!

*Electrical storm-damaged washing machine FINALLY repaired after 6 weeks! Never have I been so glad to do laundry.

*First cattle drive of the year completed--Dad on the 4-wheeler! What a joy this day turned out to be--Dad went onto hospice a few weeks ago and it was nothing short of a miracle to have him there and thank goodness he was--three calves got separated from the group and the chase that ensued was something to see. I will cherish that sweet memory.
